How filing works
You add a document. Docs2books reads it, names it and puts it where it belongs. You only step in when it is unsure.
Drop, snap or forward
- Drop PDFs and photos (JPG, PNG, WebP) onto Home, a few at a time or a whole folder. Up to 50 MB a file.
- Snap a paper with your phone's camera from the same page.
- Forward an email with the document attached to your cabinet's private address, shown in Settings. By default it only accepts mail from the people in your cabinet; you can open it to any sender.
- The same file twice is caught and skipped.
Read on your device
Each document is read right in your browser, on your own computer or phone. Scans and photos are turned into text the same way. From that text Docs2books picks out the type, the tax year, dates, amounts, who it is from and when it expires.
Social Security numbers and long account numbers are masked before any text is kept.
To check
When Docs2books is sure, the document is filed straight away. When it is not, the document waits under To check on Home with every field ready to fix. Receipts always wait there, because the category matters for your books.
Fix one and it learns: the next document like it files itself.
Read with AI is there for the hard ones. It is your choice, one file at a time: pressing it sends that one file to our server reader, which suggests the fields. You check them and save. Each plan includes a monthly number of AI reads.
Tax packet and checklist
Tax forms land in their year. Each year has a checklist of the forms that came last year, so you can see what is still missing before you file. When you are ready, download the year as one PDF with an index page, or as a zip of the original files.
Accountant links
Send your accountant a link to one tax year. They see and download that year's papers without making an account. A link ends on the date you pick, you can turn it off at any time, and you can see every download. You can also invite an accountant into your cabinet; they see only tax, work and business papers.
Money ledger
Amounts from receipts, invoices and bills roll into a simple ledger by category, for each person, business or rental you keep papers for. Export a year to CSV (a spreadsheet file) for your bookkeeping.
Renewal and shred-by reminders
Passports, licenses, insurance, registrations, warranties and leases carry dates. Docs2books catches them and emails you 30 days and again 7 days before. Tax papers get a shred-by date, three years after the return was due, so you know when the paper copy can go. See how long to keep papers.
People and sign-ins
Add the people and businesses you keep papers for. Kids do not need a sign-in. On the paid plan, up to five adults can sign in to the same cabinet.
Install on your phone
Docs2books works in any modern browser. To keep it on your phone like an app, open docs2books.com and add it to your home screen: on iPhone, tap Share, then Add to Home Screen; on Android, open the browser menu and tap Install app or Add to Home screen.
Leave whenever you like
Export everything, files and a spreadsheet of every field, at any time, on any plan. If you stop paying, your files stay readable and exportable, free.
